Digital Detox: The Benefits of Taking a Technology Break
Summer is a great time to start fresh habits and break old ones. Changing how you use technology can be a good start. A digital detox, which might include limiting social media usage for a set period of time or using your phone less frequently, can bring many benefits.
Prolonged phone use can foster a dependency on technology. People use smartphones for a plethora of reasons throughout the day: entertainment, social media, school, or work. According to the Columbia University Department of Psychiatry, “the constant stream of notifications and updates can create a sense of urgency and a fear of missing out, leading to increased anxiety and stress.”
Cell phones and other devices also emit blue light that can have an impact on falling asleep. According to the Cleveland Clinic, “exposure to blue light can affect your internal body clock and throw off your circadian rhythm.” Putting down your phone before bed can increase melatonin levels to help assist the sleep-wake cycle and improve the quality of your sleep.
