State House Candidate Kevin Whiteford Has Support of School Voucher Advocacy Organization
Joey Andrews, the Democratic incumbent in House District 38, wants to increase resources for teachers and students. On his campaign website, Rep. Andrews says that “[s]afeguarding and modernizing our public school system is essential to attracting and retaining the best and brightest along the lakeshore. Teachers and students need to work under better conditions, mental health resources, and new tools like technical and career training programs. A sweeping investment into CTE programs will empower our students to learn a skilled trade, provide a pathway into the middle class, and create great-paying union jobs to help fix our decaying infrastructure.”
Rep. Andrew voted for SB 173, a bill that increased funding for Michigan’s public schools. According to Gov. Whitmer, "This budget puts students first and supports parents by expanding access to free pre-K, providing free breakfast and lunch to all public school students, and improving higher education."
Running against Rep. Andrews is Republican nominee Kevin Whiteford.
Parental rights are a key priority for Whiteford, who states on his campaign website that “[p]arents today are frustrated that their voice and input on what is best for their children has been eliminated. Let’s give moms and dads a greater voice in the decision being made not only in education, but in the everyday lives of their children as well.”
The Great Lakes Education Project, or “GLEP” – founded by Betsy DeVos – has endorsed Kevin Whiteford’s candidacy. GLEP supports “parental choice” and voucher systems, which often require taking money away from traditional public schools.
