State Senate Candidate Jamie Wall Says Women Deserve to Make Their Own Reproductive Healthcare Decisions

Jamie Wall, Democratic candidate for Senate District 30, says he is running to “stand up for women who deserve to make their own decisions about their reproductive healthcare.”

Wall has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin, an organization which supports candidates who believe women should have access to family planning services and make their own health care decisions.

The Republican candidate in Senate District 30, Jim Rafter, has not taken a clear position on abortion rights. Rafter does not mention the issue on his campaign website, and declined to return a candidate questionnaire for Wisconsin Right to Life clearly stating his position. During an interview in September, Rafter said “we have to focus on trying to dramatically lower the number of abortions that take place.” He also implied his support for restricting abortion in Wisconsin, saying there should be a discussion on limiting abortion after a certain number of weeks.

After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the issue of abortion rights has become extremely relevant in state elections, as states now determine whether abortion is legal or not. In Wisconsin, there is an 1849 law on the books that bans abortion, even in the cases of rape and incest. A lower court judge ruled last year that abortion providers could restart services following a 15-month pause, but anti-abortion groups are still seeking to uphold the ban.
