State House Candidate Eleanor Breslin Says She Supports a Woman’s Right to Choose
The Democratic candidate for House District 143 is Eleanor Breslin, a supporter of abortion rights. Breslin says on her campaign website that she will fight to “protect access to abortion and IVF.” She further elaborates on her position in her response to a voter guide, saying, “I support access to safe, legal abortion, and strongly oppose restrictions on a woman's right to choose.” As part of her platform, Breslin says she will “fight to keep the government out of womens’ health decisions.”
Breslin has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania PAC, which requires candidates to support “access to abortion without exceptions,” according to the organization’s website.
The Republican candidate for House District 143 is incumbent Rep. Shelby Labs. Labs, currently serving in her second term, voted to limit abortion when she voted for HB 1500, which prohibited abortion if a fetus was diagnosed with Down Syndrome.
As a result of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the issue of abortion rights is now left up to the states. In many states across the country, legislators have introduced bills to restrict access to abortion. In Pennsylvania, the Republican-controlled legislature passed SB 106, a bill that could have amended the state’s constitution to say that it does not guarantee any rights to abortion. The bill would need to pass out of the legislature a second time in order to be placed on the ballot for Pennsylvania voters to decide.
