Republican Candidate Karl Bohnak Supports School Vouchers

Democratic incumbent for Michigan House District 109, Rep. Jenn Hill voted for SB 173,

which she describes as “the biggest education budget in Michigan’s history.”

Rep. Hill says that “[a]s a product of public K-12 education in rural schools and wife of a Gwinn Public Schools teacher, I know the importance of every school, regardless of zip code, having access to good educators, materials, and support services. That’s why I worked to pass the biggest education budget in Michigan’s history, all without raising taxes.”

The bill, as she explains, “secured free breakfast and lunch for every public school student, brought millions in transportation funding to the UP to help rural students get to school, and we increased career technical education.”

Rep. Hill joined her Democratic colleagues in passing SB 173, which a majority of Republicans voted against.

The Republican nominee for District 109 is Karl Bohnak. The Great Lakes Education Project, an organization funded by Betsy DeVos that supports school vouchers, has endorsed Bohnak’s campaign for the 109th District.

Bohnak says the problem with education is “bigger than just more funding,” and that he also supports homeschooling and “a parent’s ability to be the gatekeepers for their child’s curriculum.”
