Rep. Sheryl Delozier Voted Against School Funding Bill

Republican incumbent Rep. Sheryl Delozier is running for reelection in House District 88. Rep. Delozier has indicated her support for the Keystone Commitment, which promotes school choice. Its website states that “[p]arents deserve to have a say in the education choices for their child, and those choices should never be limited based on a family’s income or ZIP code.”

Rep. Delozier voted for HB 2169, a school voucher bill. The bill would have taken $144 million from public school districts and directed that funding to private and charter schools.

Delozier also voted against HB 2370, a plan to reform the state’s public school funding that, according to the Pennsylvania Capital-Star, would “end decades of underfunding public schools that deprived generations of students the education to which they were entitled by the state Constitution.”

The Democratic candidate for House District 88 is Sara Agerton. Agerton lists “well funded public education” as one of her top campaign priorities. According to her campaign website, “Public education is the bedrock of brighter future for Pennsylvanian children as well as adults looking to further their skill sets.” Agerton says that “Pennsylvanians deserve the best education possible, but that takes proper funding. I will go to the State House and make sure our public schools are a top priority for Pennsylvanian families and in the State House, it will be for me too.”

Agerton has been endorsed by the Pennsylvania State Education Association. In response to the endorsement, Agerton wrote, “PSEA is committed to promoting, protecting, and advocating for schools and provid[ing] the support needed to be successful! I am honored to be endorsed by PSEA and look forward to advocating for education!”
