Rep. Jenn Hill Says One of Her ‘Proudest Accomplishments’ is Supporting Reproductive Rights

Democratic incumbent for Michigan House District 109, Rep. Jenn Hill, is a strong advocate for reproductive health care. Rep. Hill was elected in November 2022. Rep. Hill voted in support of the Reproductive Health Act, which ensured people in Michigan will have the right to an abortion. According to Rep. Hill, “one of my proudest accomplishments … is passing the Reproductive Health Act, protecting the right for women to have control over their bodies and the doctors who provide these services.” Rep. Hill underlines the significance of abortion in this year’s election, stating “make no mistake about it – abortion access is on the ballot this year, and we need pro-choice champions to protect this right year after year.”

Earlier this year, Rep. Hill joined a group of state legislators to submit a brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in support of the abortion pill, Mifepristone.

Rep. Hill has four Republican opponents: Karl Bohnak, Burt Mason, George Meister and Melody Wagner.

Melody Wagner was endorsed by the anti-choice group Right to Life of Michigan. In order to receive an endorsement from the group, candidates must be pro-life. According to Right to Life of Michigan, pro-life means “no exceptions other than life of the mother” – meaning not even in the case of rape or incest. On her campaign’s Facebook page, Wagner posted she was “honored to be endorsed by Right to Life of Michigan.”

After Roe v. Wade was overturned, the Republican Party of Michigan issued a statement praising the Court’s ruling. Michigan’s 1931 abortion ban, which could have taken effect after the Roe decision, was repealed in 2023, although a majority of Michigan Republican legislators voted against the repeal.
