Milwaukee Teachers Association: Rep. Pat Snyder’s Vote For Private Voucher Bill Failed to “Adequately Fund Public Schools”
Republican incumbent Pat Snyder is running for reelection in Wisconsin State Assembly District 85. While Snyder says he supported a “record increase” in education funding, he voted for SB 330, which gave private voucher schools a funding increase, while failing to “adequately fund Wisconsin’s public schools.”
Amy Mizialko, the president of the Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association, called the bill “an insult to every public school student, worker and taxpayer to see the $7 billion surplus that was built on their backs result in yet another budget that fails to adequately fund Wisconsin’s public schools.”
Yee Leng Xiong is the Democratic candidate for Wisconsin State Assembly District 85. Xiong says “[o]ur campaign is dedicated to championing public education. We will work to secure robust funding for public schools to support students with special needs and those who are academically advanced.” He also says, “[w]e commit to ensuring competitive compensation for teachers and support staff to attract top talent to our state” and that “we will collaborate and invest in universities to train and help new teachers grow.”
He says he would emphasize “ensuring that there are mental health services in our schools and work to provide the necessary support for all students.” Finally, Xiong states that “[w]e will also work to advance policies and laws that deter bullying and focus on the growth and development of a safe school environment for all students.”
Xiong has been endorsed by the Wisconsin Education Association Council.
