Florida Hit by Record Storms At Start of Hurricane Season

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted an “above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin this year.” The hurricane season began on June 1 and will last until November 30.

Parts of Florida saw record-setting storms in June. On the evening of June 11 through the morning of June 12, downpour rates were averaging two to three inches per hour. In Sarasota, it rained up to 4 inches in nearly one hour.

The Hollywood area saw 17.41 inches of rain, and Sunny Isles Beach experienced a high of 15.58 inches, according to the Washington Post

The rain continued throughout that week, breaking several daily and hourly records.

The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, declared the severe weather unsafe. DeSantis issued an executive order stating that, “Because of the foregoing conditions, I declare that a major state of emergency exists in Broward, Collier, Lee, Miami-Dade, and Sarasota counties.”
