Famous Pumpkin Sculpture Arrives In London
Influential contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama’s “Pumpkin” sculpture was revealed by London’s Serpentine Galleries in early July. The sculpture, which is aptly named, sits near the Round Pond in Kensington Gardens.
Pumpkins are particularly meaningful for Kusama. The artist’s family grew pumpkins when she was young, and during World War II, pumpkins were a large part of the family’s diet.
Kusama’s fascinating pumpkin sculptures have been placed across the globe from Washington, DC to as far as Japan, and now London. The work currently in Kensington Gardens is 19.5 feet tall and has an 18-foot diameter. The pumpkin is painted in Kusama's iconic polka dots motif.
