Celebrate National Beach Day

National Beach Day is August 30. As the summer ends it is a great time to get in one last beach trip while the weather is still warm. Beach days can be long, and with the sun, waves, and commotion of the beach, it's important to pack beach day essentials methodically.

Here are three quintessential beach day essentials:

Sun Protection: There are a variety of ways to avoid sun exposure, such as using umbrellas, wearing hats and sunglasses, or setting up your beach site in shade. However, the most effective protection is sun protection factor (SPF). Sunscreen is an important part of any successful beach day. Sunburns are uncomfortable and can potentially ruin a fun day at the beach. Using SPF is an effective way to prevent harmful burns.

Hydration: Increased sun exposure can cause beach goers to experience dehydration that can potentially lead to illness. According to Johns Hopkins University, “It also happens if an individual is overexposed to the sun and not drinking enough water. This is caused when the body loses water content and essential body salts, such as sodium and potassium.” Be sure to bring plenty of water with you to the beach, and avoid beverages that contain alcohol or high levels of caffeine, which can add to dehydration.

First Aid Kit: The beach can be unpredictable, with risks such as jellyfish stings or stepping on broken shells in the sand. It’s always a good idea to be safe and prepared with a first aid kit.
