Getting Started with Hiking

Hiking is a great new hobby for summer, whether it's a local trail on weekends or an adventurous vacation hike. Hiking isn't just about exercise; it's a way to find peace and spend time in nature. While it might seem daunting at first, there are plenty of ways to get into this new hobby.

There are various types of hiking, including day hiking, backpacking, fastpacking, and thru-hiking. According to the American Hiking Society, day hiking is the most accessible and therefore the ideal starting point for beginner hikers.

The American Hiking Society advises beginner hikers to equip themselves with the appropriate gear to ensure safety on hikes. This gear includes GPS, first aid kit, extra food and water, sun protection, and extra clothing.

New hikers should also acquaint themselves with the term “leave no trace.” The principles of Leave No Trace offer guidelines for minimizing impact in all outdoor settings, from wilderness areas to local parks and beyond. These principles include disposing of waste properly, respecting wildlife, and being considerate of other visitors.

Hiking opens up a world of adventure, so grab your gear, hit the trails, and discover the great outdoors this summer!
